I find it helpful to jot down rough ideas in my sketchbook. For environments, I often take my sketches one step further by modeling the space in three dimensions using a 3D package such as Cinema 4D or Maya. By working out the actual dimensions in 3D, I can use a virtual camera to explore the most dynamic compositions and angles.

These gates are modeled in both nurbs and polygons in Maya, untextured and rendered with final gathering in Mental Ray).

This wine cellar was modeled, textured, and lit in Maya. I rendered several passes using Mental Ray, a renderer that accurately simulates how light bounces around a room. Rendering separate passes allows me to manipulate the layers of an image through a process called compositing. In this case, I used a compositing package called Shake to produce the final result.

More coming soon!
